Educating our young people as citizens is vital to our country's democracy!

Our democracy works best when citizens are actively involved in the political process. As legislators, we know first hand that the legislative process is complicated and can seem confusing. Here is a link to my web page that gives an overview of how the process works in the General Assembly.

Information on the General Assembly Website

If you wish to learn more about the actions of the legislature, you may visit the official website of the General Assembly (http://www.ncleg.net). There you will find information on the House, the Senate, Committees, Legislation and Bills, and other related topics. There is a helpful Citizen Guide and suggestions for Homework Assistance.

When the legislature is in session, you might be interested in listening to Audio Broadcasts provided for both the House and the Senate. You can listen to each day's session, committee meetings and press conferences on the General Assembly's website.

The official website also provides information about those who are currently serving  as Representatives and Senators. You may go to my House Member web page, which is provided by the General Assembly, to learn about the bills I introduce, my voting record, and my committee service.

I hope that the sampling of websites that are listed below will assist students in learning more about their government.  This is not intended to be a comprehensive list, but rather to serve as a beginning place for further online study by students, parents, and teachers.

(Please note that the links below are external hyperlinks, and you will be leaving my website when you click the hyperlink.)

"A Fun Book on the Legislative Process"

On the website of the North Carolina Legislature,  you can find educational and homework resources, and among the "kid's links," you will see links to two informative handbooks, which are available online in pdf format. http://www.ncleg.net/NCGAInfo/NCGAInfo.html

The "Fun Book" that I like to give to elementary school students when they visit me at the Legislature is entitled "An Introduction to the North Carolina General Assembly."  http://www.ncleg.net/House/Documents/fullbooklet-4th.pdf

There is another online booklet of use to students and teachers in middle school, entitled "A Fun Book on Government, State Symbols, and the Legislative Process."  http://www.ncleg.net/House/Documents/fullbooklet-8th.pdf

Brief explanations of "how an idea becomes law" are available in both narrative and diagram formats.  http://www.ncleg.net/NCGAInfo/Bill-Law/bill-law.html

"Kids in the House"

The Office of the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives has an official website for kids to learn about Congress and about the legislative process.  There is a special section with lesson plans for teachers and parents.  http://clerkkids.house.gov

Tuesdays for Tots

Here I receive artwork that children brought to the Legislature on "Tuesdays for Tots."  Pictured with me is Carolyn Paylor, Executive Director of the Franklin Granville Vance Partnership For Children.
