Working Together to Achieve Community Goals
Just as I loved the teamwork of my basketball team in high school, so
I now love bringing people together to accomplish community
goals. Those goals may arise from a civic
group, a church, a local government, a Chamber of Commerce or a dedicated community volunteer.
And it does not matter who gets the credit, so long as the job gets done.
Promoting a Vibrant Region
My long-term goal is to see District 49 as an increasingly vibrant region with:
- a strong economy,
- good jobs for citizens,
- expanding small businesses,
- an excellent quality of life,
- an outstanding educational opportunity for our young people,
- state-of-the-art health care, and
- natural resources that are valued and protected by the citizenry.

My short-term goal in the Legislature continues to be securing funding for the
four-laning
of US HWY 401 and US HWY 158. These are two necessary components in a
coordinated economic development plan for our area of the state. These roads will lead to good
jobs for citizens of our
District, as well as to safer driving conditions for motorists.
I am pleased that $48 million has been allocated to widen 401 and new
funds have been designated for the remaining portions in Franklin
County. US HWY 158 is now in preliminary planning stages.

Three Key Issues Facing District 49
- Promoting Jobs
Most of our new jobs come from expansion of existing businesses, and
the needs of those businesses and their employees are a continuing
priority.
- Quality Education
The economy, the quality of life, and the future of our children
depend on the strength of our educational opportunities.
- Health Care Solutions
Many North Carolinians are uninsured, and the cost and
the availability of our health care are a major concern.
At left, I am at my desk on the floor of the House
Chamber as another session is about to begin.
