Sharing Our Dreams

As a legislator I have drawn strength and inspiration from the fine folks I represent in Franklin, Halifax and Nash counties. Private citizens, involved civic and business leaders and local government officials keep me informed on issues of importance and concern to them.

I have great respect for the pride and aspirations and dreams that motivate our citizens. I also respect that each community has its own interests and that sometimes there are competing views on what's best.

Whether the issue is local or statewide, discussing, debating, deciding and coming back together are crucial elements in representative government. In my two terms, I have respected the views of all our citizens and sought to incorporate them into my legislative and public policy decisions.

Presentation of Order of Long Leaf Pine

I agree with Albert Coates regarding the characteristics of good public service: the right reasons to serve, the right way to serve and great joy in what we do for our fellow citizens.

In the photo at left, I have the privilege to present Lois Wheless with the highest civilian honor in the state, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Lois has achieved recognition for thirty-six consecutive years of public service on the Louisburg town council. (From the Southern City, January 2006)
